The right to water, air, and a planet which is clean and habitable for your health and well-being, is perhaps the most important human right of them all, for the environment is key to our survival. Our shared planet is deteriorating, with acts of Ecocide such as deforestation and the pollution of our oceans only worsening the effects of Climate Change, threatening the existence of our planet and thus, ourselves.

“Humans cannot be said to enjoy security of person when preponderant patterns of production and consumption, both in local communities and globally, are ecologically unsustainable”[2].

Yet it remains that “international law is weak in articulating an individual right to a healthy planetary ecosystem as a basic right of existence”[3].

AI can play a role in assisting our world for the better through helping to protect and preserve our environment, such as assisting in the discover of clean materials to convert into energy.

But what is capable in AI to help improve the ecological crisis goes deeper than what the tool can do externally, but what the corporations who owns the AI can do as with it internally as well. Googles DeepMind have recently utilized machine learning to reduce the power from their cooling Google data centres by 40%, with the very honourable goal of becoming 100% renewable. This is the only way for any business, and industry, to survive in the 21st century and make themselves sustainable in a world amidst an ecological crisis.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
- AI and technology companies alike should seriously consider creating their inventions using recycled materials, a possible suggestion materials being sourced from technology of the past, i.e old iPods, technological devices and materials from disused cars.
This would create and economic and ecological saving from sources and collecting new materials.
- To ensure sustainability, it is advised to design AI products which require charging with the ability to charge from renewable sources.
- To use AI to help configure methods to reduce non-renewable energy consumption and improve systems efficiency, further reducing the amount of energy required within in.
